Do You Need a Part for Your Harley Davidson Motorcycle

March 31st, 2008 by akeger

Need a Harley Davidson Part for your ride?

Where do you get a good quality Harley Davidson Part? Can I use an aftermarket part?

These questions are not easy to answer. It depends a lot on your situation, part you’re looking for, and the money you want to spend.

The bottom line……… you have to decide.

I have a little information here that may be useful to you, so keep reading!

An OEM part versus an aftermarket part.

An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) part are of course the genuine Harley Davidson Part you would find at an authorized Harley dealer.

These parts are original in that they have the exact same specifications that came with the original part.

These parts however many not have been manufactured by Harley Davidson themselves (at their physical location). Harley may get another company to manufacture these parts to Harley specs, and then they will sell them in the Harley box as OEM.

OEM parts are generally more expensive, and almost always recommended by the dealer. (They make their money by selling parts not bikes)

The dealer will most likely tell you that OEM parts are of a higher quality. This may or may not be true.

An Aftermarket part should perform as well as an OEM but take note. These parts were made by a company other than the original manufacturer.

Sometimes after a certain time period the original manufacturer of a part will allow the company that physically manufactured the part to sell it at a reduced price and in their own packaging. The part now becomes an OEM aftermarket part.

Normally after a certain period of time, the manufacturer will allow the company that originally designed/produced the part to sell it in their own box at a considerably lower cost, making it: an Aftermarket OEM part

So what does this tell you about that Harley Davidson Part that you need?

If you cannot find the quality in an aftermarket part, then search for the OEM provided it is in your price range.

There is a lot of competition out there between vendors who want your dollar. An aftermarket Harley part, for your Harley Davidson are generally of good to excellent quality.

If you own a Harley, sooner or later you will have to buy parts for it. Buying online has its conveniences and you don’t have to go downtown and fight traffic.

Why Motorcycle Gear Is For Both Comfort And Safety

March 30th, 2008 by akeger

Riding a motorcycle is a fun, exhilirating experience for sure. But motorcycle riders don’t have a lot of protection that surrounds them when riding, and if something goes wrong and the bike goes down or it is involved in an accident, there is no outer shell to protect a rider like there is in a car. So what will afford the best safety for motorcycle riders to help in such situations? Actually, it’s the gear or apparel that they wear that can be their best protection.

Of course, motorcycle gear like helmets, leather jackets and pants, and gloves also contribute immensely to riding comfort as they provide insulation against the wind and road debris that may be encountered on the ride. But they do so much more.

Take helmets for example. Motorcycle helmets come in several styles and paint schemes, but they all are designed for the same purpose, to keep you safe. Whether you choose a full face helmet, half face helmet, shorty helmet, or other type of motorcycle helmet is a matter of personal choice and how much protection you are comfortable with.

Obviously, a full face motorcycle helmet affords the most complete protection, but make sure that you try one on first to make sure that you are comfortable with that kind of design first.

A shorty helmet is the least restrictive of all, and gives more of the feeling of the open road as you can really feel the wind in your face. But keep in mind that there is significantly less protection involved too.

Motorcycle leather is a biker’s best friend. Motorcycle leather can literally make the difference between an enjoyable ride and one that isn’t.

Also, if your bike goes down for any reason, there is nothing like a good “hide” to save your hide. Motorcycle leather can be the only thing between you and the road at that point, and you will be glad that you are wearing it. Just ask any biker who has experienced “road rash” when their bike went down and you can quickly understand how valuable good quality leather apparel can be in such circumstances.

And one of the most sensitive areas on the body is the hands. They are also usually the first thing that a biker puts out in an attempt to cushion their fall in an accident. That’s when you would really be glad that you were wearing a good set of motorcycle gloves to help keep your hands safe from abrasion.

So if you ride motorcycles, be sure to stay comfortable and safe with good, high quality motorcycle gear and apparel.

Motorcycle Batteries

March 29th, 2008 by akeger

Motorcycle batteries vary by brand. Choosing motorcycle batteries involves several important factors. You need to know a good bit about your bike in order to purchase a motorcycle battery.

Motorcycle batteries vary by engine size on any particular motorcycle. Motorcycle engines range in size and are measure by cc. A small engine could be a 260cc for example, where as a larger engine size can be 1200cc. The higher the number, the more powerful the engine.

Motorcycle batteries are specifically designed for specific brands. If you drive a BMW motorcycle, you will purchase a different motorcycle battery that if you drove a Harley-Davidson.

Motorcycle batteries can be purchased in several different ways. Standard type is a “spillable” battery that requires dry shipment. The acid must be purchased locally in order to activate the battery. The acid is called electrolyte, which is sulfuric acid, diluted by water. This must be added only to a dry shipped battery. Normally, acid is not needed to be added to a battery. Once a battery is purchased, only approved water should be added.

Another way batteries can be purchased is sealed maintenance free or Sealed MF.Sealed MF is a sealed maintenance free battery that comes ready to install and is “non-spillable”. Other options when purchasing motorcycles batteries include high performance, AGM types, and Odyssey.

All motorcycle batteries are lead acid batteries. There are completely recyclable and should never be thrown away with regular waste. Motorcycles are easy to check charge with a voltmeter.
